Hey, I was wondering if someone could give me some info on some shell diseases. Im not sure that anything is wrong, but one of my turtles has a few white patches on its shell. Many parts of the shell are shedding, but one portion seems white. Im not sure if this makes any sense, but ill take all the help i can get.

I'll try the tooth brush, but I can't post a pic, because I am a poor, unemployed highschool student...what can I say...

Well, I found a picture that looks similar to what is going on with one of my turtle's shells, but not quite. This is a picture of shell rot, but i HOPE that isnt what they have. I think i read somewhere that shell rot makes the shell soft, and that it smells, is this true? On my turtle, the fungus or whatever it is is only one about 7 back plates, and one middle plate (also near the back). It almost looks like too much of the scute was lost when it was shedding and that it got a little deep into the shell. Another possibility is that it was scarred by a log decoration that was in the tank that they tended to get caught under. At any rate, if this is shell rot, or a fungus, or scarring, how serious is it? Is it life threatening? Do I need to get them to a vet? What can i do? As Always, tdusa the pic is on this link...sorry, the site is in spanish... reslider.free.fr/livre9.jpg

That could be one of three things: -vitamin deficiency -layers of carapace are about to be shed or -shellrot Try feeding more fruits and veggies, do more water and filter changes, and raise the temp to 80*. Get some Tetra Vita-Shell and apply a cpl times a week. If it doesn't improve in a month, you'll have to go to a vet. I hope it's not shellrot, keep us posted :chez
