"A good basic food for alligators, caimans, aquatic salamanders, and virtually all kinds of turtles is canned dog food. Be sure the brand you buy has been fortified with vitamins and minerals..." - A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians, Roger Conant
In my search for good books for the Library section of GTT:r, I happened upon this one.. needless to say there will be none of the care information from this book going on the site.
edit: the book was published in '58.. poor hippie turtles!!

There is so much of this stuff around in books made up to five years or so ago. Its sad, but very difficult to take back now unfortunately. Whenever you decide to keep an animal you should find the most up to date information you can about it.
My pet hate is vets who have a book from 1985 telling them crap, and won't accept what you tell them about discoveries made since then (the dog food with Iguanas is the most common problem)

It is far too fatty, and can seriously damage a reptiles liver.
