Hey guys, I was a member of GTT,a though I did not post too much....
Anyway, I am the proud owner of a 2 year old male RES (Sam). Sam is a vary skiddish turtle and I was wondering if this is ok. And by very skiddish I mean.. he is afraid of guppies and other fish in his tank, he almost never eats them... I put some in for him to eat and now they are bredding in there cause he won't eat them. He swims away everytime something in the room moves, and he will definitly not ever let me catch him basking unless I am really sneaky.
Thoughts?
Steve

Some turt's are just like that - he'll grow out of it as he realises he's a big mean turt that can eat anything you put in front of him (including your grubby ikkle fingers)

I have two turtles, Snoopy and Droopy, both of which are Red Eared Sliders and are about two years old. In the way of personalities, they couldn't possibly be more different from one another. Usually what happens is Snoopy, the more adventurous of the two, has to try something out, and if he does ok, Droopy, a rather lazy RES, will take a half-hearted crack at it. I recently gave my turtles their first Rosy Reds (I wanted to use guppies, but for some reason, they are about $2.50 at Wal-Mart). I was told that to make the transition less stressful for the fish, I should place them in the tank while they were still in they bag where they were purchased. (After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion, who cares, the fish are about to be lunch for my turtles anyway.) When I let the fish into the tank, Droopy ran and hid under the decoartive log that is used to make their basking area more accesable. Snoopy chased and ate both fish. I tried again using feeder fish yesterday, and both Snoopy and Droopy went after them, but Snoopy prevailed, and ended up eating all four fish (what a hog...). Anyway, I don't think you have anything to really worry about. It is possible that your turtle is unfamiliar with the feeder fish, and hasn't yet realized what a tasty treat they are. Give him some time. Then again, he may never come around to eating the fish, and my best advice to give here: don't worry about it as long as he is eating enough other foods. You might also want to try different types of fish other than guppies (Rosy Red Goldfish, etc.), perhaps your turtle simply has refined taste! My turtles also used to run when they were caught basking, but since I have installed their new light, I don't seem to bother them, I guess they enjoy their basking time more now! ;D ;D ;D
