Hello. I am new to the "turt world" and I was wondering if you could help me. I have a Western Painted and I have heard that they hibernate. Is this true? Is it necessary (I have heard their health suffers eventually if they don't, but I can't find much info on it)? How do I know when it's time? How do I help them? What do they need? etc, etc...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Also, would like to add...this is the best site I've found on the net! Good job! It's great to have so much info in one spot!

Hibernation for your turtle is not necessary unless you are planning to breed. I never hibernate my guys. You are risking a turtle's health, since the immune system will begin to shut down. There's also predators to think about if you house the turtle in an outdoor pond and plan to hibernate him outside.
