Used pond pumps a couple of times, they are just as good as canisters, the downsides are that they are a little nosier (still quiet though!), a bit harder to set up/maintain and the pump takes up a bit of room in the tank....
You can build some kick-ass set-ups though, my mate has got a pond in his yard, and the pump sends water in tubes that go into the filter, then round into the basement, where they wrap around the heating pipes. That way his water heating costs are almost zilch
