I really like the way live sand looks over rocks and I like the fact that it helps eat waste and I need to know if it is okay to use it for a Res and I also know Softshells love them and I might get one in the future.

Im pretty sure you can not use live sand in freshwater tanks. You would have to use play sand. I have used it before on my softy tank. Just be sure to wash it before you put it into the tank. I dumped the sand into a pillow case and just ran water through it until the water ran almost clear. Chris

I would advise against ALL sand, in my experience it just ends up blocking filters, although I think some people found ways round it.
My softie is in the finest gravel I could find - he loves it!

Yeh when I used playsand for my softy I put a piece of pantyhose over the intake of the filter. Sand looks good but its a huge pain in the a** to clean. I wouldnt use sand unless you have a softy, and even then you can try to find some very small, SMOOTH, gravel for it. Chris

Wow......I use sand in al my tanks and I just put my intake tube above the sand and I do not have these problems......
Sand is a great substrate to use.....its also easier to clean than gravel.
