It appears canister filter best bet for turtles. We have 2ea. yellow-bellied love to swim turtles & are growing. Can't seem to find best filter system for that much water. Don't mind buying 2ea. or 3ea. filters, as long as they do good job. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, what media is best to use as well.

Great to see someone keeping there turtles in a large tank. I would reccomend 2 FilStar XP3's. I am more than posative that they will do a great job. They cost around $100 each, so your lookin at $200. If you do not want to go that route you can get a FilStar XP3 and a AquaClear 500. Or even 2 AquaClear 500's would do the job. Going with the 500's will save you some cash. Chris

Aquaclear 500's are for tanks up to 100g. So technically 2 would work for your 180g, but remember these ratings are for fish, not turtles. Turtles are much dirtier. If you did want to get power filters (hang-on-tank variety), you would need say 2 AC 500's and say an AC 300. Two, let alone three, power filters are very noisy, due to the waterfall effect that is created (which in turn is good for aquariums, but thats a whole other topic ). So with the size of your tank, the best option is to get Filstar's like Chrysemys suggested, or Fluvals even, I hear they are great filters as well. Good luck ;D. [glow=blue,2,300]:Chez[/glow] p.s. If you are buying online, GTT:r is affiliated with PETsMART. www.gttreloaded.com/store.html, and right now you'd get free shipping on orders over $50.00 (click the link on the Store page) (and GTT:r would get a small commission off your order!

I'd go for 2 fluval 404's and a power head.
stick a fluval intake/outtake spread out at each end, and put the powerhead in the middle to get the water over to the filters

Go for the XP3's......they last longer, are quieter longer, easier to clean and maintain and better bang for your buck in the long run......In my opinion. I started with fluval, not so quiet, so we upgraded to Eheim.....not so easy to clean and maintain.....so again I upgraded to Filstar XP3......whew......now I am deliriously happy. Note I was buying for three tanks each time, thats how unhappy I was with eheim and fluval:( One XP3....keeps my 135 gallon clean, with work. I added a XP3 to it,so now i have two, and the tank water is sparkling........And I will get around to posting pics
