Hi! I'm a new keeper of an RES (I don't know how old he is, but his shell is about 1.75" inches long). For how long should I leave his basking light on?

Welcome, memling, to forum de la GTT:r ;D I try to mimic nature, so I have the lights on a timer, for about 12 hours a day. Do you use a UV (ie, Reptisun) light in addition to your heat lamp? [glow=blue,2,300]:Chez[/glow]

I'm too poor for the traditional solution to basking time, the light timer, so I just turn the aqaurium lights (1 Florescent and 1 Reptisun 5.0 Iguana UVB Light) and the basking light on when I wake up, which is about 10:00 AM and turn them off around 11:30 PM.

I know, they are pretty cheap, but I am out of money ;D. I just spent $400 on a new turtle setup, and today spent $51.00 for the vet (my turtles are doin good). After all that spending, I figured I could do without a timer .

I too like to replicate nature, but I personally, leave my lights on for about 12-16hours.....if they are basking near shut off time I leave the light on till they go back into the water...... .....I'm a suck that way with them. Jinx

Yeah!! Timers are very important i believe. because they set a normal routine of when the light turns on an dwhen it turns off, so really there is know different times. so they turtles can adjust and set a routine. this is difficult if you don not have a timer for a number of reasons because, like one day you my wake up at like 8, but the next day you wake up at 10. so that will confuse the turtle, another reason is like you may stay in one day and, turn the light off when say the sun goes down, but on another day you may go out while the lights still on and not get back for ages and the lights still on. the turtles will get totally confused! you get me?!? so timers are very important for the well being of your turtles and their mental health also. futhermore i live in england and its summer here so the sun comes up at like six till like 8. so my timer is on at the same time. so my timer mimics nature. and also in the winter, when there is not much sun ill set the timer again. Woooooooooooooooooo ;D

Hey, welco uhh lol who were you before this so-called new name? Yea the timers are called um, timers, by me anyway.. I don't know what else to call them. They usually have a round dial on them complete with numbers for setting the time for it to turn w/e you have plugged into it on, and for how long to keep it on. Its a small little box that has one or two sockets for plugs in it. Does that make any sense? lol [glow=blue,2,300]:Chez[/glow] p.s.- To All- The news from July to present is going up tomorrow, I swear it!!
