Hello! I have 2 painted turtles.. one is in its first winter, the other its second. Now i was hoping to place them together so i could have one joined tank... Save me time etc...... Anyways, so i put them together n the larger one bit the small guys head right away, so i was panicked and grabbed it, the lil un it okay thankfully. Anyways, i was wondering what the deal is, will it take time to break them in, or should i keep them seperate. Also a side note, the larger 2 yr old, used to have a companion until this past summer, when unfortunatly it died... Just wondering if i can get any help/advice on this situation THANKS

Hey, neveroddoreven, welcome to the forum. What kind of turtles do you have? And how big is that tank that you want to have both turts in? Larger turtles will sometimes harass smaller ones. It could be that the tank is too small, and that the bigger turt is being territorial. First, you might want to try adding plants and other hiding places, so the turts aren't right in eachothers faces. Wait a few days so the larger turtle gets used to his new "furnishings", and then introduce the smaller one for a little while each day, for like a week. If she is still being attacked, I'd say it's a lost cause. Another idea is to get a larger tank. With a larger tank, the bigger turt might be more willing to share his enviornment. I hope this helps! Describe your setup and this will help tremendously.
Yes, death is possible. Like Chez said, separate & re-introduce may solve the problem. But permanent separation may be your best bet. Even with a bigger tank, and the two seem to get along, one day one of them may decide to pick on his tankmate. You just never know.

Hey Hey. The tank i want to use is a 27 gallon, long, not high... It has a large rock build up to the side for basking. thats roughly it, i didnt introduce them into the tank, i had them together in a small aquarium, to watch n see wut happenned when the initial attack occured. I guess im just going to have two tanks from now... oh well

27 gallon long is a bit small for 2 painteds; too small for even 1, in my opinion. Like most basking turtles, female painteds are slightly bigger than males (approx. 6-8 inches) . What kind of painted turtles do you have? The smallest painted is the Southern painted; biggest is Western painted.
Eventually the turtles will outgrow the tank and you'll have to get a bigger one. If you still intend to keep both in the same tank, I recommend 100 gallon (bigger is always better). This will provide sufficient swimming area since painteds are excellent swimmers.

I would advise you to keep the turtles sperated. You should not put turtles in the same tank if one is smaller than the other. Even then problems could occur. I would just play it safe and house them seperatly. Chris

You can generally mix basking turtles (painteds, sliders, cooters, maps). Every turtle is different, some can still get aggressive and territorial. Your painteds may or may not attack each other. It's a decision you must make. If you still decide to house them together, either have a spare tank ready (for separation purpose) or don't be too attached to either turtle in case you need to replace one of them.
Just my two cents

I agree with ultimus. But you've seen them fight.. I wouldn't risk it. A dead turtle is no fun. [glow=blue,2,300]:Chez[/glow]
